Azalea Networks Awarded United States Patent for its "Intelligent" Adaptive Wireless Mesh Routing Technology
12/8/2009
The only true Layer-3 Wireless Mesh Network Solution offers
unmatched scalability while increasing the performance,
quality of service, and reliability of video, voice, and data traffic
Milpitas, California – December 8, 2009 – Azalea Networks, a leading innovator in wireless network equipment and technology, today announced it has been issued a United States patent for its wireless mesh network technology known as Adaptive Wireless Routing™ (AWR). The patent covers Azalea’s routing protocol that operates at Layer-3, or the network layer, offering multiple advantages such as greater scalability and reliability over competing solutions that operate strictly at Layer-2, or the physical layer, of a network.
The fact that Azalea’s solution operates at Layer-3 allows it to provide “intelligence” throughout the network, from the core to the edge nodes, which offers greater network management and control. “This key patented technology is what sets Azalea apart and provides a higher-performing foundation for solutions including 802.11n,” commented Felix Zhao, chief technology officer at Azalea Networks.
As a dynamic, distributed routing protocol purpose-built for wireless networks, AWR is
able to forward packets at near nominal wireless data rates across multiple hops with a per-hop latency of under two milliseconds. And even though AWR is a robust routing protocol, it is remarkably efficient, enabling it to be implemented cost-effectively on wireless nodes with multiple radios. Even with changes in topology or the quality of radio links, AWR adapts, maintaining the highest level of performance for users on the network.
Adaptive Wireless Routing overcomes the internetworking limitations imposed by the spanning tree structure of a purely Layer-2 network. To overcome limitations caused by access contention, Azalea supports up to four independent, software-configurable radios in a single node with each operating in either access point mode or backhaul mode in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, or in the licensed 4.9 GHz band (U.S. Public Safety). AWR’s network intelligence is able to take full advantage of this multi-radio, multi-path topology in its route creation and packet forwarding decisions.
Azalea’s technology delivers high-quality voice, video, and data communications while offering the ability to expand, grow or modify a network as needs change. The “intelligent” characteristics of Azalea’s network routing technology lie in its ability to deliver peer-to-peer routing across the entire network while enabling network management from the host to the client. Azalea’s solution also enhances its wireless network’s integration with other wireless and wired networks, including the Internet, enterprise networks, or service provider infrastructure, adding flexibility for the wireless network operator. “This patent verifies Azalea’s leading technological advantage with our AWR protocol, providing public safety experts, enterprises, municipalities, and more with a better alternative to existing wireless mesh solutions,” added Zhao.
