Donation of Wireless Routing Equipment and Deployment Assistance to be Sent to Aid Emergency Workers and Military Personnel in Sichuan Earthquake Zone
MILPITAS, CA, USA, and BEIJING CHINA – May 29, 2008 – Azalea Networks’ management announced today a relief effort aimed at assisting the victims of the recent magnitude 7.9 earthquake that caused widespread destruction throughout the Sichuan Province in southwestern China. Investors and partners in the wireless routing company are contributing communications equipment including routers, cables, network management systems, video surveillance equipment, and installation expertise needed to extend communications, which have been cut off by the powerful quake, to emergency workers and citizens remaining in the ravaged area.
Reports indicate that nearly 14 million Chinese people in the area are now homeless, many with no options for reaching the outside world, as major roads and any means of communication were destroyed and continue to be disrupted by intense aftershocks. Tens of thousands of victims in the affected areas could not get word out to family and friends immediately after the disaster, leaving many in despair. The goal of the wireless communications relief effort is to establish quick, easy-to-deploy communications to replace infrastructure that was damaged or extend the capacity of remaining communications networks.
Azalea Networks will deploy as much as two million Chinese renminbi (nearly US $300,000) worth of its Emergency Response Wireless Network (ERWN) equipment to aid in providing victims, emergency and medical workers, and military personnel with communications networks as well as video surveillance that can be deployed anywhere throughout the affected area, offering a fast means of establishing communications with the benefits of wireless technology. The unique advantage of Azalea’s ERWN technology is that it can be set up quickly and inexpensively to cover large areas with highly-reliable and flexible wireless networks. With the benefit of Azalea’s Active Video Transport (AVT™) technology, video can be transmitted wirelessly with a great reduction in packet loss, ensuring more reliable surveillance capabilities.
According to Fang Wu, founder and executive vice president of Azalea Networks, “This terrible disaster is something that we cannot control, but we can control how we respond to it. That’s why we are organizing a task force to quickly deploy wireless communications networks anywhere they might be needed by relief workers and the military.” Azalea Networks’ contributions will directly assist the victims in cities such as WenChuan, Mianyang, DuJiangYan, and Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, and other surrounding areas affected by the earthquake.
